The Arctic Fox
(Alopex
Lagopus)
Arctic foxes have adapted to their environment over time. They have small bodies to minimalise their bodies’ surface area helping them to stay warm. They have short facial features and limbs to help keep in the heat also. They have developed a thick fur coat to help insulate them; this fur also covers their paws to allow them to walk on the cold snow without it affecting them. It will lose lots of this fur during summer and the colour will also to from white to brown. All these adaptations will benefit the animal as it means it can save energy on heat production allowing more energy to be used for hunting. There fat layer will also provide insulin preventing heat loss. Bodily systems have adapted to ensure there is high blood supply throughout the body, by the arteries and veins now been next to each other to stop the fox from getting cold especially at night.

The Fennec Fox
(Vulpes
Zerda)
Fennec Foxes have adapted to their environment over time. They have large ears which they can move about in a fanning motion to help them cool down during hot days. They can also lose heat by panting and sweating. There thick fur helps provide heat during the cold nights and well as their sandy colour which helps reflect the heat as well as acting as camouflage. The fur also covers their paws to protect them from the hot sands. These feature adaptations benefit the animal by helping to save energy which can then be used for other things like hunting. By their coat been camouflage this means they are hidden more from predators giving them a bit more safety which is beneficial. This fox can survive without water, this meaning their kidneys have had to adapt to this and help maintain body water levels. They help restrict water loss in different ways, which is important to ensure dehydration doesn’t occur. Water can be taken in through food as well as through burrowing and hibernation can help form dew which can then be consumed. This could benefit the animal if it is been hunted and has to hide somewhere different for a while, knowing it can still survive without water been present.
